Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Updated: May 6, 2024

What it is about:

A follow up to The Black Swan by the same author. He dives into the underlying principles of the effects the first book described and goes much further in exploring the effects of uncertainty, variability and how many systems, operations and processes we have collectively designed leave us open to failure from those effects, in effect making them Fragile. He then proceeds to describe how to not only shield systems from these disruptions, but how to design them to take advantage and thrive in an environment where change, uncertainty and unexpected events are prevalent. All in an engaging, easy to understand and rigorous narration with plenty of examples.

Why it changed my thinking:

In our times, uncertainty, variability and disruptions are not rare events or "bugs". They are actually the norm and a "Feature" of the environment where operations, supply chains, governments and communities operate. Long gone are the days where we can design and behave just considering the "expected forecast". Yet, we are notoriously bad at reasoning with uncertainty and randomness. This book gives the conceptual tools and the start of the "training" to think and work in this uncertain world. The rest of the "training" and putting it to practice is up to you.
